no semi's

Taken outside the Port Orange, Florida police department. Shouldn’t there be a class for the world to take on how to use the apostrophe?

I’m not convinced by this one “No Semis” simply looks incorrect. This is simply apostrophe showing omission

    • Steve says:

I agree. The fail here is that the website thinks this is a fail. “Semi” is presumably short for something (we don’t use the term in the UK, so I don’t know) in which case the apostrophe denotes that the part of the word after “semi” is missing.

  2. evan says:

Semi in American English means ‘Articulated Lorry’. While it is no doubt derived from the word ‘semi-trailer’ or ‘semitrailer’, it has through use become a bona-fide word. It’s a bit of a wiggly one but ‘semi’s’ would have to mean that the writer intended to be using the longer synonym but lacked space. it’s like writing ‘math’s’ for ‘maths’ because the word is short for ‘mathematics’.
